Rua Joaquim Murtinho, próximo a Francisco Muratori

Streetcar of Santa Teresa, is better to seat to wait for it

In November 2013 we were spending soles on the slopes of Santa Teresa went to see how the recovery works of the streetcar line that served the neighborhood and has always been a major tourist attraction of the city (to see this post, click here). At the time, the good news is that the work had begun, but three months later found that very little was done.

In fact, the construction sites are virtually in the same place, just in another stage of work. On the first visit they were removing the old rails and are now putting the new one. Judging by the pace of work and considering the fact that the passages in progress does not represent or 10% of the total to be done, it can be stated that there is no provision for return of the tram!

Meanwhile, the population suffers from the absence of the tram and the extreme precariousness of public transport because buses had to be diverted because they have no space on the access road. The van service made available to serve the residents is considered insufficient and cause a lot of complaint, both by limited availability, like the path performed. Not to mention the dust, noise and closed garages.

Talking with shop owners in the region is perceived that dissatisfaction is general. Due to narrow streets of Santa Teresa became almost impassable the circulation of tourists on the spot, and the low frequency of costumers found in the Saturday is just another proof of this.

Despite demonstrations, protests and posters around the neighborhood, the authorities have not been sympathetic to the problems of the region, this attitude that has only exacerbated the climate of dissatisfaction of the residents.

Santa Teresa wants its tram back, but not at any price. Hopefully on our next visit have better news to report.
