Sua construção é considerada a primeira obra de urbanização e a primeira iniciativa de saneamento da cidade do Rio de Janeiro.
O projeto e execução da empreitada ficaram a cargo de Mestre Valentim, considerado o melhor escultor brasileiro da época. Além de supervisionar os trabalhos, Mestre Valentim criou várias das esculturas que adornam o Passeio, inclusive os jacarés de bronze da Fonte dos Amores.

Não deixa de ser curioso o fato do Passeio Público ter sido criado em função de uma necessidade que persiste até os dias de hoje: dar mais qualidade de vida à população. Se no século XVIII era preciso aterrar um pântano, atualmente é vital manter áreas abertas nas grandes cidades para garantir luz e ar puro!
Passeio Público
The Passeio Público of Rio (a kind of public garden) is located in the historic city center, near the Cinelândia and in the path that leads to Lapa . The idea of building a public garden in the city was carried out in the late eighteenth century and aimed to sanitize a swampy and unhealthy area who was tormenting the people with their bad odors and mosquitoes .Its construction is considered the first work of urbanization and the first initiative to sanitize the city of Rio de Janeiro .
The design and execution of the contract were to be borne by Mestre Valentim , considered the best Brazilian sculptor of the time . In addition to overseeing the work , Mestre Valentim created several of the sculptures that adorn the Walk , including the brass alligators from the Fountain of Love .
The alleys that pass by the garden are filled with works of art , as the four cast iron statues representing the seasons .
Another feature of the place is to be the home of several cats who lives there and have food, shelter and affection of visitors. Were placed at strategic points "cats hotels", protected structures for the pussies can spend the night and take shelter from the rain .
It is still curious that the Public Garden have been created due to a need that persists to this day : give a better quality of life for the population .
