Em meados do século XIX foi justamente a escassez de água que disparou o alarme da necessidade de recompor a mata que protegia as fontes que abasteciam a capital do Império. E esta função permanece ativa até hoje, mesmo com o crescimento descontrolado da população urbana.

Mas a mata tem muito mais a oferecer. Graças a ela a erosão do solo é controlada, bem como a ocorrência de enchentes. E sem ela a temperatura média na cidade seria de aproximadamente 10 ºC a mais!
