O anjo pensativo e a tocha.
Thoughtful angel and the torch.

Others opted for the vertical projection, building towers carved marble.

Algumas enfeitam a vida, outras enfeita a morte.

Cônego Rios e a Flor Cadáver

The rest of the Barons

The Cemetery of the Brotherhood of N. Mrs. Conceição houses the final resting place of the ancient Barons of Coffee. Rich and powerful in life, left for posterity graves trying to perpetuate the opulence enjoyed in life.

Are gravestones, tombs and ornaments finely carved in Carrara marble, reminiscent of the golden period of funerary art.

The symbolism is present everywhere and, as in other sectors of art, one must master the language of symbols used in order to understand the message conveyed by the artist. An angel pointing upward, for example, indicates that the person was good in life and is expected to go straight to heaven. Have a thoughtful angel may indicate that it is reflecting on the actions of the deceased, trying to decide which will be your eternal destiny.

Objects are also used to represent concepts related to life, death or virtues. The inverted torch means death, as well as sickle. An hourglass with wings, the transience of time. Motifs derived from nature such as flowers, fruits and leaves represent nobility or precocity.

The tomb of the Baron de Campo Bello is actually an underground crypt which is accessed by a metal door located at ground level and opens like a trapdoor.

In Brazil we have a popular refrain that says even the flowers has difference of luck. Some adorn the life, other graces the death (sounds better in Portuguese, of course). In another words, the same occurs with funerary monuments, as many people find it difficult to appreciate its beauty due to its association with death. However, this type of assessment is widespread, including having tours that include visits to famous cemeteries in Europe. At its next pass by Vassouras city, be sure to see how ends the story of the greats Barons Coffee!

Cônego Rios and the titan arum

In this holy ground occurs a singular phenomenon widely known by the inhabitants of the city and I can guarantee that it is true because I have witnessed it with my eyes.
According to some versions, in Vassouras city lived a very pious and religious priest known as Cônego Rios, or Monsignor Rios, who died in 1875. Following express determination of him, his body was buried in the ground, without any type of building and beside the chapel. Gradually the fame of holy man of the Cônego began to attract pilgrims have seeking relief from their afflictions and a simple tomb was built to mark the spot.
Since then, without apparent reason, near to the Day of the Dead (November, in Brazil), rises a plant on earth that covers the tomb of the religious, but not just any plant. Springs a strange flower that gives off a strong smell of carrion, for it being known as Planta Cadáver (translated like Corpse Flower). Unlike Amorphophallus titanum (the original titan arum), which can reach up to three meters tall and blooms very rarely, this is small and blooms once a year. Due to the risk of predation, a metal grill  was installed to protect the plant.
